Dupuytrens Contracture Fasciotomy (Closed Technique) Protocol

  • 3-5 days post op –
    • Follow Dr. Instructions.
      • If there is a drain present, make sure you know when the Dr wants it removed if you don’t hear anything 24-48 hours after the procedure.
    • You will be fitted with a pan splint to keep the fingers straight into extension.
    • Perform AROM and PROM exercises 6 times a day for 10 minute sessions for the wrist and digits.
    • Include blocking exercises for the PIP and DIP
  • 7-10 Days Post op
    • If having trouble with regaining active flexion, contact your doctor about utilizing NMES (neuromuscular electrical stimulation). They should be able to advise you on a unit you can use at home.
  • 10-14 Days post op
    • Sutures should be removed at this timeframe
    • 48 hrs after suture removal, begin gentle scar tissue massage.
    • Keep using resting hand splint to promote extension.
    • Utilize a compression glove for edema or swelling.
    • Heavy focus on not only flexion, but extension as well!
  • 6 Weeks Post op
    • Begin gentle progressive strengthening with putty or hand exerciser.
    • Continue with hand splint at night and 3-4 times a day for 1 hour sessions.
  • 10-12 Weeks post op
    • Night time splint wear only. Continue for 6-9 months post op.
